The Cottage- By Fouzia Parveen-XI A

Stephen has always been the one who never believed in ghosts. Like any other twelve year old, he did not bother much about it, but was scared of unfamiliar places and sounds. The family decided to go for an outing to their cottage. The cottage was an old one, built many years ago and the adjoining area of land belonged to a king’s family. But the land was said to be their family graveyard now. Anyone in the family who die would be buried there. The land was almost filled with graves. When Stephen arrived at his cottage, he liked his room on the first floor of the cottage, from where he could view the cleanest graveyard he had ever seen. He enjoyed the first day at the cottage, but the night was horrible. The chill atmosphere, the spine – chilling silence and the gloom in his room terrified him. Then he knew he could not sleep. The sounds of silence, the noises of insects and horrid sounds kept him awake all night. He would just think of different sounds he could hear and numerous questions would flood in his brain, was it the branches of the nearby tree, or fingernails against the window? The silence was broken by a wicked laughter of a woman that can be heard from the graveyard. Stephen could not even walk due to the darkness and he fell. As he was trying to go downstairs , he saw a creature that looked like an old woman who pointed her index finger to the graveyard and wrote on a paper ‘ CROWN – GRAVE – FAMILY – SYMBOL ‘ . Stephen could not read so the woman lit a magical candle. Stephen read but could not understand how were the words related. And within a few seconds, the paper turned blank and that woman was disappeared. Stephen never understood the mystery and never since that night had he gone to the cottage and always said that ghosts do exist and what people say that there are no ghosts, is a myth.
